The brainchild of former Electric Skychurch member David deLaski and LA breakbeat native John Kelley, Ball of Waxx is home to many influential DJs-come-producers from the infamous Moontribe milieu. Groove Closet collects their downtempo gems into a nocturnal ritual of innovative sounds ranging from the desert to the sea. DeLaski's own Lord Runningclam sets the mood with "Desert Dress," combining gentle guitar and stark beats overlaid with sensual vocals. Running throughout with muscular yet intimate grooves, Brian Saitzyk's Eastern Sun and Numatic Soul projects, Linnear, Desert Dwellers, DJ Brian's Seed project, Tha Roman and Rara Avis, each lay down sweet electro hydroponics that conjure comparisons from Kruder & Dorfmeister to Mr. Velcro Fastener. It's forward-thinking electronica still in touch with its communal soul, epitomized perfectly by the album's closer, "Rapture at Sea," a rare beauty by John Kelley and Eastern Sun that will literally have you hitting the repeat button countless times in a row
Direct with avant funk and heady lullabies, Groove Closet illuminates and motivates delivering sensuous beats, rumbling bass and electro jazz including many of L.A.’s electronic culture influencers, John Kelley, Seed (DJ Brian), Desert Dwellers (including Treavor Walton), and Lord Runningclam, Ball of Waxx delivers the stone, chill, groove mixed with an exquisite blend of experimental glitchhop and ethnic flavor ambience.
Lord Runningclam's music encompasses everything from spiritualist ethno-techno and evocative ambience to sensual electro-jazz and playful global grooves. Beginning with his days as Moontribe regular and member of Electric Skychurch, Lord Runningclam (aka David de Laski) has charted a groundbreaking career spanning two decades of uncompromising yet endearing music.
Electric Skychurch's "Knowoneness" and "Together" were remarkable releases for Los Angeles' mid '90's live electronica scene, marked by uplifting vocals and live tribal percussion. Splitting off on his own, Lord Runningclam released "Fun for the Whole Family" on Moonshine Music, including two collaborations with spoken-word poet Ken Nordine, resulting in a cheeky but innovative album that never ceases to amuse and astonish.
Reflecting the Ball of Waxx ethos, de Laski's mischievous brainchild Lord Runningclam continues to hit and anticipate all the major points of global electronica.
As one of Moontribe's original DJs, John initially made a name for himself as a tribal breakbeat maven, playing everything from Peace Division and Leftfield to Underworld and Speedy J. Building his name as a heavy hitter in the global DJ circuit, touring with Crystal Method and Orbital as their official DJ in the 1999 Community Service Tour, John has earned his badge over the years as an underground trendsetter.
But away from his DJ persona lurks a creative producer with a knack for writing sonic beauties. With Seed he has written chunky, warping breakbeat journeys that always get a crowd going. More recently, his experiments with Eastern Sun indicate an exciting new direction, epitomized by their hauntingly beautiful "Rapture At Sea."
Mr. Kelley's tastes range from tribal house and techno to hard psychedelic breakbeat and uplifting progressive sounds. Integrating all of these tastes with his DJ intuition, John brings a unique sensitivity to electronic music production.
